How I Turned a Bland Teriyaki Chicken Meal Into a Flavorful, Comforting Stir Fry Using Simple Pantry Ingredients
As a caregiver, there are days when meals come already prepared, but the flavor just isn’t there. Recently, I received a teriyaki chicken meal for my elderly father and my autistic sister. While I was grateful for the convenience, the chicken lacked depth, warmth, and the comforting flavor that makes someone want to eat. Caregiving taught me that flavor matters. It can improve appetite, bring comfort, and make meals feel like care instead of obligation. Instead of serving it as-is, I used simple ingredients I already had at home to create a quick stir fry sauce that completely transformed the dish.

Step 1: Separate the Chicken From the Original Sauce
The first thing I did was remove the chicken from the original meal and set it aside. This gave me control over the flavor and allowed me to rebuild the taste from scratch.
Why this matters:
Pre-made sauces are often weak, overly sweet, or flat. Separating the protein allows you to add fresh flavor layers.
Step 2: Build a Simple Flavorful Stir Fry Sauce From Pantry Staplesz
I used ingredients most caregivers already have in their kitchen:
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon honey
½ teaspoon ginger powder
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon onion powder
¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 tablespoon flour
2 tablespoons water (to make flour slurry)
Step 3: Make the Flour Slurry (Cornstarch Substitute)
Since I didn’t have cornstarch, I used flour instead.
In a small bowl:
Mix 1 tablespoon flour
Add 2 tablespoons water
Stir until smooth
This helps thicken the sauce so it coats the chicken properly.
Caregiver Tip:
Flour works just as well when cornstarch isn’t available. Use what you have.
